Old Game, New Tricks
Ever since the game was first invented in the good ol’ 1800s, the search for the perfect table tennis ball has continued. It was only when the celluloid ball was introduced in the early 1900s that the game became popular.
With the new millenium came major changes to table tennis ball specifications, as defined by the International Table Tennis Federation(ITTF) handbook in the year 2000.
Out with the 38s, In with the 40s
Following thousands of trials in the late 1990s, the rules were amended and thesize of the ball was changed from 38mm to 40mm.
The smaller 38mm ping pong balls are faster and provide more spin than 40mm balls. The introduction of speed glue has also increased the speed of the game. ITTF thought that by slowing the game down, the rallies between players would increase and the game would be more appealing to viewers.
Making the weight cut
ITTF-approvedtable tennis balls must weigh 2.7gbut there is an accepted tolerance between 2.67 and 2.77g.
Lighter ping pong balls are slower and more likely to falter on air. Our KingPong balls weigh in at 2.75g. We pack an extra .05g. Egad! -- for a perfectly balanced speed and exceptional stability on ball trajectory.

In 2011, ITTF decided to promote plastic balls over the popular celluloid balls.The raw materials used to create celluloid balls are deemed hazardous to healthand several countries no longer allow manufacturers to use them.
